Message me with any questions and feel free to send offers. This gem is ready to go for the next 50 years. All the electrolytic caps are new (CE cap can), all signal caps have been replaced with Mallory 150 film type, power resistors have been upgraded to 2 watt metal oxide and 1 watt carbon film, and all potential problematic carbon comp resistors have been replaced with modern 1/2watt carbon film type. If you are looking for a killer tube amp with with a lot of vibe and top quality build, this is a great way to go. The speaker jack can be configured to 4, 8, or 16 ohm output - ready for any speaker cab you may have. Last but not least it has very high quality power and output transformers - these are a huge part of why vintage amps sound so good and luckily they have never been replaced. For recording, the amp has a Line Level RCA output jack labeled "Output to Tape Rec". The output section uses negative feedback, further differentiating this circuit from most Vox designs. The second half of the 6BR8A is configured as a Cathodyne phase splitter. It's a very cool way to shape and control the drive of this amp. The Treble and Bass controls are very responsive and seem to add gain as they are pushed. The previous "Phono" pot/knob was made into a Trainwreck Style Type 3 Master Volume. This was also cathode bypassed with a 50uf 100v capacitor to provide fuller frequency response.

The pentode line driver (1/2 of the 6BR8A) comes next and is responsible as a gain stage for the guitar signal and driving the power tubes to full output. This helps create the ferocious overdrive that defines this amp - "Mike 1" is the normal channel and "Mike 2" is the bright channel with added 500pf bright cap on the volume pot. The input stage is a Grid-Leak biased triode, a very old and rare technique that has disappeared from the repertoire of amp builders today - it has a super high impedance of 10Meg. However the similarities end there as this amp is really a highly original and uniquely designed circuit. So this amp obviously bears some similarities to early Vox amps as it is mid powered, contains 2 cathode biased EL-84's and also uses a pentode (think EF-86) in the pre-amp. All tubes are NOS and are original to the amp. The tube compliment is rounded out by a GE 5Y3 tube rectifier. The preamp section consists of a Mullard 12AX7 as the input stage and a fairly rare RCA 6BR8A that contains both a pentode line driver and a triode phase splitter in the same glass envelope.

The power-amp puts out a full 24 watts provided by 2 Mullard EL-84's in push-pull. Overall this amp reminds me of early Vox AC-15/AC30's that contained the highly sought after EF-86 tube pentode in the front end. It goes from a clean chime at lower settings, to an unbelievable British sounding overdrive at half volume, which then turns into a full on distortion/fuzz meltdown when cranked to 3/4 volume and above. This is an incredible sounding vintage amplifier that boasts an all tube signal path that is completely hand wired point-to-point with no circuit boards of any kind. The Newcomb E-20 started it's life as a PA for the local school system but has now been fully converted to a guitar amplifier. This is a 1968 Newcomb Pathfinder E-20 that has been professionally modded by Kenton Electrix amp repair in Tucson, AZ.
